Activity 2.1: Identifying Family Strengths and Weaknesses View the video “Interviewing Skills: Meeting with a Parent”. On your own, write down as many positive aspects of the household and positive interaction with Mrs. Bleux that you observe. You will not turn anything in. Activity 2.2: Resources vs. Deficits You know the question about whether the glass is half full or half empty? In your CASA/GAL volunteer work with families, you can ask yourself a similar question, focusing on the positive or the negative. If you look at a family through a “resource lens,” you focus on identifying the strengths. If you look through a “deficit lens,” you focus on the problems. All families have strengths and weaknesses. Part 1: Read the information that follows about the differences between using a resource lens and using a deficit lens when working with families. Part 2: After reading the assigned content on Resources v Deficits, write an informed response to the following questions in one or two paragraphs in the discussion forum. What are the benefits of using a strengths-based approach in your work as a CASA/GAL volunteer? What are the drawbacks of using a strengths-based approach?

Activity 2.3: Stress Level Assessment Part 1: Just as all families have strengths, at some point all families encounter challenges. Families unable to cope well are often isolated from resources, face a variety of challenges and are stressed by numerous problems that compound one another. Stress can become crisis— the family moves, a parent is laid off, childcare arrangements fall through, a new step family comes into being, the car breaks down, a child becomes ill, the rent goes up and so on. The families you will encounter in your work as a CASA/GAL volunteer are, by definition, under stress and likely to be in crisis. Their involvement in the child welfare system, and the perceived threats to their parental rights serve to increase their stress. Some families cope well and adapt effectively to stress and crisis; others do not and become overwhelmed. These families may develop patterns that lead to and then perpetuate abuse and neglect. Their stress response diminishes their ability to attend to the needs of their children. Part 2: Watch this 5-minute video to learn about how to build adult capacities in order to improve the lives of children and strengthen our communities. Part 3: Complete the stress level assessment found here. Part 4: In the online discussion forum, post your responses to the following questions: What color would you assign to having your child removed from your home by the child welfare system? How might stress affect a family’s interactions with CASA/GAL volunteers and other child welfare professionals? What color might they identify to indicate their stress? As a CASA/GAL volunteer, how might understanding the stress level of a family affect your recommendations?

Activity 2.4: What Challenges You? Part 1: Which of the situations on this list would you find the hardest to work with? Make note of the three you’d find hardest. What are your “hot buttons”? A parent who spends most of her money on drugs. A parent who believes his wife/partner deserves the beatings he gives her. A parent who lies to you. A parent who lives in a deplorably dirty home with human/animal waste and no water. A parent who fondles his 4-year-old child. A parent who used drugs during her pregnancy. A parent who refuses to take the medication that controls his mood swings. A parent who left his children in the car in a parking lot while he went drinking at bars until closing time. Consider how this relates to the material you already read about stress on families and its impact on children. Socioeconomic status, or class, is a major factor that greatly defines how people live in the world. According to the Children’s Defense Fund, at the end of 2015 close to 15 million US children lived in poverty. There are many myths and stereotypes associated with being poor. To separate myths from reality, examine what we do know about children and poverty in the United States.

Activity 2.10: Budgeting This assignment is for your own use, and will not be turned in. It is designed to help you understand the challenges of living in poverty, and it is recommended that you take your time with this. If appropriate, this may be a topic of interest to mention in an online or in-person discussion in the future. Part 1: Copy the chart below onto a piece of paper. Fill in the figures for your own personal budget. You will not be asked to share these figures with anyone else. Part 2: Now go back to the form and fill it out a second time as if you were the head of household for a family of four living at the poverty line in 2017. Your annual budget is $25100, which comes out to approximately $2091 per month. What would need to change? Part 3: Play Spent How much money did you end up with at the end of the month? Using resources in your community, find answers to the following questions about poverty and public assistance. Activity 3.4: What Challenges You? Part 1: Consider the following effects of substance abuse as you watch the video below. It is important to remember that when a parent is involved with drugs or alcohol to a degree that interferes with the ability to parent effectively, a child may suffer in many ways: A parent may be emotionally and physically unavailable to the child. A parent’s mental functioning, judgment, inhibitions and/or protective capacity may be seriously impaired by alcohol or drug use, placing the child at increased risk of all forms of abuse and neglect, including sexual abuse. A substance-abusing parent may “disappear” for hours or days, leaving the child alone or with someone unable to meet the child’s basic needs. A parent may also spend the family’s income on alcohol and/or other drugs, depriving the child of adequate food, clothing, housing and healthcare. The resulting lack of resources often leads to unstable housing, which results in frequent school changes, loss of friends and belongings and an inability to maintain important support systems (religious communities, sports teams, neighbors). A child’s health and safety may be seriously jeopardized by criminal activity associated with the use, manufacture and distribution of illicit drugs in the home. Eventually, a parent’s substance abuse may lead to criminal behavior and periods of incarceration, depriving the child of parental care. Exposure to parental abuse of alcohol and other drugs, along with a lack of stability and appropriate role models, may contribute to the child’s future substance abuse. Prenatal exposure to alcohol or other drugs may impact a child’s development. Part 2: As you watch the clip of the news story, “Saving Kids ... Children of Addicts,” think about advocating for a similar family as a CASA/GAL volunteer Part 3: After watching the clip, participate with your classmates in the online discussion, take time to respond to a few of the following questions: 1. What was going through your mind as you listened to the stories of the siblings impacted by their mother’s substance use disorder? How did you feel about the mother? 2. Did anything change for you the way you think about people impacted by addiction? Why or why not? 3. After watching the video and thinking about your role as a volunteer, what challenges might you have balancing the children’s best interests with their mother’s addiction? 4. If you were the CASA/GAL volunteer in this case, what concerns would you have regarding these children and potentially reunifying with their mother? 5. Unlike what happened in this video to the mother, most addicts don’t have that one dramatic experience that “scares them straight.” It’s often a difficult journey to sobriety with peaks and valleys. What concerns would you have supporting a child of a parent who struggles with addiction? What additional information would you want to have at your disposal to inform your recommendations to the court?
